In many rural communities, a staggering 90% of the children discontinue their primary education due to inadequate preparation through pre-primary education. Shockingly, only 1 in 10 children in Uganda has the opportunity to attend and complete a full pre-school program limiting the possibilities for 9 out of 10 children to reach their full potential and secure a brighter future. The existing Early Childhood Development (ECD) and Learning Centres in rural areas are privately run requiring children to pay a fee yet they lack essential resources and proper facilitation to ensure children's effective learning and development.
The financial constraints hinder numerous households from providing fees and necessary school suppliers for children to start school, consequently, many parents opt to delay their children's formal education until the age of 6 or 7 to enrol them in the universal primary education. This well-intended decision however, results in children dropping out early before even making it to the 5th Grade or primary five, growing up to face unemployment and grapple with life's challenges, perpetuating a cycle of poverty across generations.
Recognising this critical issue, our ECD program is strategically designed to promote positive change, by providing a comprehensive early years education and development program for children aged 3-6. Our program focuses on ensuring safety of children, nurturing their sense of responsibility, empathy, and Social-Emotional development. Simultaneously we equip them with the skills necessary to lead a thriving generation, breaking the cycle of poverty and fostering a brighter future for all children.
Our community school is currently supporting 55 children who had not been to school before, we are excited to provide them with the opportunity to kickstart their childhood with education. We do provide them with a school uniform and a nutritious cup of porridge every day as part of the program.
